Motor Start-up Thermistor Description
Positive temperature coefficient thermistors for motor starting are primarily used for starting motors in refrigerators and air conditioners, starting air conditioner frequency converters, and providing motor overheat protection.
Working Principle
The motor starter utilizes the current-time characteristic of PTC ceramic. When voltage is applied, a large current flows through initially. After a brief period (0.1 seconds to several seconds), the PTCR temperature rises, causing resistance to increase rapidly and current to drop sharply. This timing depends on heat capacity, resistance value, heat dissipation conditions, load resistance and working voltage.
When external voltage is removed, the PTCR cools to room temperature resistance. This principle enables widespread application in motor starting for household appliances like refrigerators and air conditioners.
Important: For consistent delay time performance, allow sufficient recovery time (tr) between operations for the PTCR to return to original temperature state. Immediate repetitive actions should be avoided to prevent compressor failure and potential burnout.

What Is PTC Thermistor Motor Starter?
PTC Thermistor Motor Starter delays switch-off of motor starter auxiliary winding after motor acceleration to protect winding from damage. These economical solid-state devices provide torque assist for heat pumps, room air, commercial and residential air conditioning and refrigeration systems.
When circuit is turned on, PTC has low resistance with most line voltage applied to starter winding. After motor starting, PTC heats up and switches to high resistance state. Timing depends on PTC size, resistance, and current flow through starter winding.
Compared to alternative start capacitor and relay systems, PTCR motor start devices save wiring, occupy less panel space, mount more easily, and cost less.
